Off-screen, Kate Mulgrew is markedly different in appearance from full-bodied Mary Ryan. Kate says of her screen image: "The other women in the show are beautiful foils for Mary, because they're all gorgeous creatures; magnificent-looking women. When I met them during auditions, I thought, 'No way I'm going to get cast.' But they wanted pure Irish from Mary, and that's exactly what they got with me!"
Kate and castmate Michael Levin (Jack Fenelli) take a break between shooting scenes on location for Ryan's Hope.
The diverse moods and attitudes of Kate Mulgrew were discovered in her dressing room and outside the American Shakespeare Theater where she appeared in Our Town this past summer.
